How to Maximize Sprinkler Efficiency

June 20, 2019

One of the biggest complaints leveled against proper lawn care is that it can be a waste of water. However, there’s no reason you need to miss out on the benefits of a properly cared for landscape. Here are a few cheap ways to help maximize sprinkler efficiency so you can save water and your lawn.

Drought-Tolerant Plants

  • An easy way to keep your garden diverse and thriving is by selecting plants that require less water. Plants like yarrow, yucca, and sage thrive in low water conditions helping you save on water and still providing your yard with beautiful scenery.

Lower Watering Point

  • It's also important to remember not to water the leaves of the grass but rather the roots. If your sprinkler is set too high, you’re more likely to lose water to wind, and evaporation. Keeping your sprinkler low helps to ensure every bit of water reaches the soil meaning you use less.

Mow High

  • Don’t cut your grass too short. Taller blades of grass help shade the soil and slow down the evaporation process. If your soil stays hydrated longer you don’t have to water as frequently.

  • Turning your sprinklers on at the correct time is essential to maintaining a healthy lawn and preserving as much water as possible. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning so as to prevent any water lost to heat.

Water with Less

  • As a general rule, it is better to water your lawn for shorter amounts of time more often than it is to water it for longer amounts of times less frequently. This prevents any possible root rotting and provides a healthier lawn.
